Who are we?
E. Clampus Vitus is an ancient and honorable order. Founded in 1849, we are the first and foremost protectors of the heritage of the American West. Our motto is “Credo Quia Absurdum” meaning "I believe it because it is absurd". Umpqua Joe 1859 is the local chapter for the Southwestern Oregon area.
Enlightening Others to the Wonderment of the Past
We work to preserve the unique history of the West. We collaborate with various organizations to hunt down accurate information, so that every plaque and monument is as unique as the story it tells.
